WOMEN KNIT AND CROCHET A 'PRAYER SHAWL' TO PRESENT TO POPE FRANCIS

NORRISTOWN >> A group of women at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Norristown are using their spirituality, their knitting needles and a rainbow of colors to reach out to Pope Francis during his visit to Philadelphia.

Last April, the 10 women, some of whom are not St. Francis parishioners, but are all part of the Prayer Shawl Ministry of St. Francis of Assisi, took on a designated color and then crocheted or knitted half a dozen squares that were joined in a row.

Much of the work was done individually on their own away from their monthly meetings, but the ultimate goal was to stitch the 10 completed rows together to form a blanket, which would be the group’s gift to Pope Francis.
