TOWAMENCIN DECLARES EMERGENCY AHEAD OF PAPAL VISIT WEEKEND

TOWAMENCIN >> With the visit of Pope Francis to Philadelphia now just days away, Towamencin is taking steps to be ready, just in case.

The township’s supervisors voted Wednesday to declare an emergency starting Friday afternoon and running through Sunday night, a move supervisor and Emergency Management Coordinator Dan Littley said is being made for several reasons.

“You have to plan for the worst, and hope for the best,” he said.

The declaration makes Towamencin eligible for any federal reimbursement if any disasters happen during the event and declarations are made by the president and governor, he said. It also allows the township to activate its emergency operations center located at the administration building on Troxel Road. That center will have what Littley termed a “soft opening,” with officers monitoring radios, starting at 3 p.m. Friday, and a full activation starting at 9 a.m. Saturday and running through Sunday evening.
