WASHINGTON D.C. >> The defense of the family, a reoccurring theme to Pope Francis’ visit to the United States, rounded out a speech in front of Congress that included a defense of immigration, a push toward environmental mindfulness, a plea to end the proliferation of arms dealing and a repeal of the death penalty.

While Philadelphia will host the largest spectacle of his United States trip, on Capitol Hill Thursday the pope gave a message to the future generation.

“The family should be a recurring theme to the building of this county,” Pope Francis proclaimed from within the chamber, broadcast to 10,000 people on the West Front of the Capitol.
